💊 Medicine Safety at Home: 8 Simple Rules
Most medicine mistakes at home are easy to avoid. These eight simple rules help keep you and your family safe.
1. Read the label and leaflet
Check the dose, how often to take it, and the warnings. If something is unclear, ask a pharmacist or doctor before you start.
2. Check the expiry date
Never use expired medicines. For syrups, drops and creams, also note how long they stay good after opening.
3. Store medicines properly
Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and out of reach of children. A humid bathroom is not the best place. Keep tablets in their original packs.
4. Do not take antibiotics without a prescription
Antibiotics only work for certain infections and should be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor, for the full time they advise. Never share your antibiotics or keep leftovers for later.
5. Do not double up on the same ingredient
Many cold, flu and pain products contain paracetamol. Taking several of them together can lead to too much. Check the ingredients and never go above the daily limit on the label or set by your doctor.
6. Tell your doctor and pharmacist everything
Mention all your medicines, supplements, allergies and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Some medicines do not mix well.
7. Measure liquid medicines correctly
Use the measuring cup or syringe that comes with the medicine, not a kitchen spoon.
8. Dispose of old medicines safely
Do not flush them or leave them lying around. Seal them in a bag, keep them away from children and animals, and ask your pharmacy about safe disposal.
When to get urgent help
Swelling of the face or lips, trouble breathing, a severe rash, or taking too much of a medicine are emergencies. Go to the nearest hospital straight away.
