☀️ Sunscreen Guide: How to Choose and Use SPF Properly
Sunscreen is the single most useful skincare product you can buy. Ultraviolet (UV) rays cause sunburn and tanning, speed up skin ageing (wrinkles and dark spots) and raise the long-term risk of skin cancer. UV is strong in Pakistan for most of the year, so sun protection matters every day, not only in summer.
How to choose a sunscreen
- Broad spectrum: it should protect against both UVB (burning) and UVA (ageing) rays. Look for “broad spectrum” on the label.
- SPF 30 or higher: SPF 30 is a good everyday level. SPF 50 is useful if you spend long hours outdoors.
- Water resistant if you sweat a lot, swim or work outside.
- Texture: gel or fluid formulas usually suit oily skin; creams suit dry skin.
- Mineral or chemical: both work. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide / titanium dioxide) are often better tolerated by sensitive skin.
How much and how often
- Use enough. A common guide for the face and neck is the “two-finger rule”: a line of sunscreen along your index and middle fingers.
- Apply about 15 minutes before going out.
- Reapply every 2 hours, and right after swimming or heavy sweating.
- Use it on cloudy days too — UV passes through clouds.
Common mistakes
- Using too little product.
- Forgetting the ears, neck, hands and the back of the neck.
- Relying only on makeup that contains SPF.
- Using an expired sunscreen. Check the expiry date and the “period after opening” symbol.
Sunscreen is only one part of sun safety
Also seek shade between about 10 am and 4 pm, wear a hat and sunglasses, and cover up with light clothing when you can.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor or dermatologist if you notice a mole or spot that changes in size, shape or colour, bleeds, or does not heal.
